Research Description
The Cochlear Implant Research Lab at Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center is directed by Dr. Rene Gifford in the Departments of Hearing and Speech Sciences and Otolaryngology. The lab focuses on speech perception and psychoacoustic properties of acoustic and electric hearing for both pediatric and adult cochlear implant recipients. The director's primary interest is in the combination of electric and acoustic hearing as compared to bilateral cochlear implants for speech recognition in complex listening environments. Ongoing NIH-funded research projects include speech perception, localization, neuroimaging, and psychophysical evaluation of spectral and temporal processing with cochlear implant recipients.
